A fresh coat of paint on your ceilings can have a dramatic effect on the rest of your home. Ceilings can become very dull looking after a few years due to the amount of heat that dries them out. Freshly painted ceilings will seal the drywall and get rid of the musty smell. Your ceilings need painting, if done right they can look amazing. Beautiful as a white wedding cake!
Choosing the correct ceiling paint
Today there are many types of paint on the market and it can become overwhelming choosing the right paint. Firstly, your ceilings get no traffic, so you don’t have to worry about touching them up! Secondly, there is no reason to use a shiny paint or high sheen for your ceilings. Lastly, color is always subjective, however most of our ceilings are a shade of white. I suggest choosing a flat paint with very little sheen. I use Sherwin Williams Pro Mar 400, which is a dead flat chalky paint. Additionally, it hides a lot of imperfections.
Painting ceilings is similar to walls, however be sure to blend with your roller cover to eliminate lap lines. If this happens check to make sure you are spreading the paint evenly. A good thick roller cover helps on textured surfaces. And remember, always apply two coats of paint, as the first coat is just soaking into the sheetrock. Do not dry roll, meaning, you have to apply a good amount of paint. It the ceilings are textured and dry try pushing with your roller handle so the paint can absorb correctly.
